理查德·萊文斯

理查德·萊文斯（英語：Richard "Dick" Levins，1930年6月1日—2016年1月19日），從事多種人口學研究，為生態學家、群體遺傳學家、數學生態學家以及科学哲学家。在逝世前，萊文斯任教於美國哈佛大學陈曾熙公共卫生学院（英语：Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health），並長期推動政治運動。萊文斯最知名的研究包括環境轉變之進化論和複雜性，以及關聯族群理論。

萊文斯的著作及演講風格十分精煉。受到馬克思主義的學術理論所啟發，萊文斯的分析取向並不以大眾化題材為目標，也因此，其論著與一般生態學或演化論學迥然不同。

此外，萊文斯亦著作有關生物學及建模的哲學論述。其中一篇具有影響力的作品是《族群生物學的建模策略》（The Strategy of Model Building in Population Biology）。其著作啟發了許多當代的生物哲學家們。身為馬克思主義的學者，萊文斯以馬克思的學術著作《大綱》（Grundisse，即馬克思另一著作《政治經濟學》（Das Kapital）的手稿）作為基礎架構，進而應用於「環境轉變之進化論」（Evolution in changing environments）的相關研究。萊文斯並與演化論基因學者理查德·路溫頓（Richard Lewontin）合作，於生物學的相關領域，例如方法論，哲學，及社會政策建議等方面，有相當豐富的著作，當中許多作品已被集結於《辯證生物學（英语：The Dialectical Biologist）》一書。西元2007年，兩位學者出版了專題論文集《影響生物學之著作：生態、農業與健康之辯證學文集》（Biology Under the Influence: Dialectical Essays on Ecology, Agriculture, and Health）。^[2]

生平

1930年6月1日，理查德·萊文斯出生於紐約市的布魯克林區。^[3]身為烏克蘭的猶太人後裔，萊文斯是在政治與科學震盪的社會氛圍當中，以及傾向共产主义的家庭環境下成長。十歲時，萊文斯深深到受馬克思生物學者哈爾丹（J. B. S. Haldane）的作品所啟發。萊文斯十分推崇哈爾丹，並認為哈爾丹的卓越貢獻應該等同於科學界的愛因斯坦。

進入康乃爾大學後，萊文斯修習農業以及數學。於1950年，萊文斯與波多黎各的作家羅莎里奧·莫拉雷斯（Rosario Morales）結婚。萊文斯畢業當時，由於被康乃爾大學列入黑名單，萊文斯夫婦兩人只好移居波多黎各過著農牧生活，並且從事農村組織運動（rural organizing）。1956年，萊文斯夫婦返回紐約市，他於1965年獲得哥倫比亞大學的博士學位。1961年至1967年期間，萊文斯成為波多黎各獨立運動的重要活動人士。此外，1964年萊文斯首次造訪古巴，由此機緣與古巴的生物學者們進行長期科學及政治的合作運動。然而，由於萊文斯參與波多黎克的獨立運動以及反戰爭運動，波多黎各大學取消其終身教職。因此，於1967年萊文斯夫婦帶著三個孩子（奧羅拉、里卡多以及亞歷山卓）移居芝加哥。於芝加哥大學任教期間，萊文斯結識路溫頓。此外，萊文斯全家亦曾居住於新罕布夏州。後來接受學者威爾森（E.O. Wilson，稍後兩人曾對社會生物學的觀點展開辯論）的邀請與贊助，萊文斯夫婦遷居至哈佛。萊文斯也曾被美國國家科學研究院（US National Academy of Sciences）遴選為院士，但萊文斯辭去了該頭銜，因為美國國家科學研究院在戰爭期間協助指導美國軍隊。由於萊文斯是若干政治組織的會員，包括美國共產黨、波多黎各共產黨、波多黎各獨立運動（英语：Independence movement in Puerto Rico），以及波多黎各社會黨（英语：Puerto Rican Socialist Party），美國聯邦調查局（FBI）曾因此一度將其列入調查名單。數十年來，萊文斯致力於將生態學應用至諸國的農業領域，尤其關懷經濟處於劣勢的開發中國家。

2011年，當萊文斯的妻子羅莎里奧過世後，萊文斯的女兒奧羅拉搬至麻省劍橋與萊文斯同住，照料其生活起居。

環境轉變之進化論

在萊文斯的研究之前，原本群体遗传学假設環境是恆定的，而數學生態學也假設物種的基因組成是恆定的。然而，萊文斯的情境建模研究卻發現在環境改變時，演化也開始出現。在萊文斯的建模研究中，最令人驚訝的發現是物競天擇（seleciton）未必使某個物種產生對環境最大的適應能力。相反地，有些物種會選擇讓自己滅絕。稍後，萊文斯將其1960年代在古巴授課的內容及研究成果集結成書，名稱為《環境轉變中的進化》（Evolution in Changing Environments）。此外，萊文斯廣泛地將數學運算，包括若干自己提出的公式（當中若干運算在純粹數學以及經濟學界已被發現，但當時萊文斯並不知曉）。例如，萊文斯廣泛將凸集理論應用於適合度集合（fitness sets）（類似J. R. Hicks的經濟學公式），以及將賽渥·萊特的路徑分析（Sewall Wright's path analysis）應用於因果回饋循環（causal feedback loops）的分析。

關聯族群理論

「關聯族群」這個名稱源自於萊文斯在1969年著作中的描述：族群的族群（population of populations）。^[9]物種成群居住於適合的各個環境而組成斑塊的亞族群（sub-population）。然而，這些地方族群系統可能會絕滅，也可能被其他地域遷徙過來的移民所定殖（colonization）。因此，當地族群的命運取決於絕滅以及被定殖兩種力量的平衡。萊文斯引進一個建模系統來描述這平均斑塊佔領（average patch occupancy）的動態過程。受到萊文斯研究的影響，關聯族群理論已然成為空間生態學（spatial ecology）、應用保育生物學（applications in conservation biology）、族群管理（population management），以及蟲害控制學（pest control）的重要研究範疇。^[10][11]
