1821年,埃利亚斯·芒努斯·弗里斯在其著作《Systema Mycologicum(英语:Systema Mycologicum)》中描述發表了傘菌屬之下的亞屬Gomphus與其下物種粘铆钉菇,並於1835年在《Corpus Florarum provincialium suecicae I》將該亞屬提升為一獨立的屬,改名為Gomphidius[2],其名稱來自希臘文的'γομφος(gomphos),意為塞子或大型的楔形鉚釘[8]。弗里斯並未指定模式種,不過粘铆钉菇作為本屬第一個被發表的物種,於1946年被指定為本屬的選模標本(lectotype)[5]。1948年,洛夫·辛格描述發表了本屬下的一亞屬Chroogomphus,1964年,美國真菌學家小奧森·K·米勒(英语:Orson K. Miller Jr.)將該亞屬獨立為新屬色釘菇屬。1971年,米勒又將本屬分為Microsporus、Roseogomphus與Gomphidius等三個節,其中前兩者的蕈傘多為紫色或粉紅色,蕈柄上端具有簇生的柄生囊狀體(英语:Cystidium)(caulocystidia);後者的蕈傘則多為深紅色、紫灰色或棕色,柄生囊狀體散生或缺乏[5]。
