在《Wordle》中，玩家要在一天內用六次機會內猜中某個有五字英文字母的詞彙。每次嘗試後，玩家可能得到三種回饋：綠色表示字母位置正確；黃色表示答案包含該字母但位置錯誤；灰色表示答案沒有該字母。這種玩法和珠璣妙算（Mastermind）之類的遊戲相似，但《Wordle》會明確指出哪些字母猜中了。

沃德爾曾在Reddit上創作了社會實驗《Place》和《The Button》。

之後，他設計了《Wordle》，但最初只是給自己和伴侶帕拉克·沙（Palak Shah）遊玩。2021年10月，他正式在網上發布了遊戲。同年12月，沃德爾增加了將遊玩結果分享成繪文字方塊的功能，於是引起大批玩家在推特上分享遊玩結果，令遊戲受關注。許多仿作（英语：video game clone）、變種及不同語言的版本相繼誕生。

遊戲玩法 编辑

玩家每日可挑戰在六次嘗試內，猜出由五個字母所組成的英文單詞。[1]每次嘗試後，每個字會顯示為綠、黃或灰色：綠色表示字母猜中，而且位置正確；黃色表示單詞包含此字母但位置不正確；灰色則表示字母出現的次數多於實際出現的次數。[2]所有人每天的單詞都一樣。[3]

另外遊戲提供困難模式，玩家在後續猜測中必須包含先前猜出的綠色或黃色字母。[4]遊戲還有夜間模式，以及為色盲玩家提供的高對比模式，該模式下，黃和綠色塊換成了橙和藍色塊。[4][5]

此遊戲在概念及樣式上與1955年的紙筆遊戲Jotto（英语：Jotto），以及遊戲綜藝節目Lingo（英语：Lingo (American game show)）相近。[6][7][8][9]遊戲玩法亦同兩人遊玩的桌遊珠璣妙算以及猜数字相似，不過《Wordle》會顯示字母是否完全正確。[10][11][12]

每日的遊戲是從2315個單詞中隨機抽取的（英文約共有120000個五字母單詞）。[10][13][14]這些單詞是由Shah選擇的，她將這些詞分成她認得的，她不認得的以及她有可能接觸到的。[15]

雖然沃德爾的故鄉是威爾斯，不過他居住在纽约，所以《Wordle》內的單詞使用美式拼寫（英语：American and British English spelling differences），令使用美式拼法的玩家更有優勢。此事也導致其中一天的答案「favor」觸怒了一些認為不公平的英國玩家。[16][17]

沃德爾最初創作遊戲給自己和伴侶帕拉克·沙遊玩，因為他們「着實沉迷」紐約時報拼字比賽（英语：The New York Times Spelling Bee）及每日填字遊戲（英语：The New York Times crossword puzzle）。[10][15]

2021年10月中旬，在他親朋好友「很快上癮」後，他發布這個遊戲，並命名為《Wordle》（源於他姓氏沃德爾的發音的雙關（英语：pun））。[10]他在2013年已經開發過相似的原型；[18]，該原型遊戲是可以不斷玩下去的，一個接一個地解謎，而且單詞列表沒有經過篩選。[15]沃德爾之前在Reddit工作時，亦創作過兩個線上社會實驗按鈕和Place。[10]

2022年首，《Wordle》人氣突然上升，其後湧起多個仿製版（英语：video game clone）。部分仿製作品以新穎的方式，改動了Wordle的機制。

《Absurdle》[註 1]是遊戲的對抗變式，目標生詞並非自始確定，而可能隨猜測而變。作者賬戶名「qntm」，曾編寫俄羅斯方塊的對抗版本，稱為《Hatetris》[註 2]。與《Hatetris》相類，《Absurdle》的目標是作為《Wordle》所有可能版本中，最難的一個。[33]

其他仿製還有衹用英文四個字母髒話為詞庫的《Sweardle》，以及詞長可變的版本。[34][35]

2022年1月頭，App Store上出現了若干帶廣告（英语：Advertising in video games）的仿製，但是遊戲機制沒有太大變化，甚至借用遊戲原名。[36]用戶持續捉出App Store的其他仿製品，直至同日完結，App Store上幾乎全部仿製品經已下架，不過蘋果公司沒有表明下架一事是否他們所作。[37]

《Wordle》獲改編成多種語文，包括俄语[38]、荷蘭語[39]、西班牙语[40][41]、漢字[42]、成語[43]、诗词[44]、广州话（粵拼）[45]、繁体字（倉頡輸入法[46]、注音符號版[47]）、加泰罗尼亚语[40]、加利西亞語[40]、德语[41]、乌尔都语[41]、匈牙利语[41]、日语[48]、法语[49]、葡萄牙語[41]、泰米尔语[41]、土耳其语[41]、希伯来语[50]、威尔士语[51]、意第緒語[50]等。巴西葡萄牙语[52]改編版《Termo》的每日遊玩人數，在2022年1月達到200,000。

《Wordle》的游戏模式也被引入其他领域，比如数学领域的Nerdle[53]、历史领域的OTDLE[54]及世界領域的Worldle[55]等。
