刺蛾成虫身体和前翅密生绒毛和厚鳞。幼虫体扁，大部分种类体表生有枝刺和螫毛 。当人被刺蛾幼虫蜇过后, 皮肤 会红肿、疼痛 ，严重甚至会威胁生命。因此刺蛾科幼虫被称为“痒辣子 ”、“火辣子 ”或“刺毛虫 ”[3]
幼虫多以阔叶树叶为食。是重要经济林、行道林的主要害虫 [3]
金蛾科 （Chrysopolomidae）原來跟刺蛾科一樣是斑蛾总科之下的一個科，由兩個亞科組成，包含約30個分佈於非洲的物種[4] 金蛾亞科 （Chrysopolominae ），原來在金蛾科之下的兩個亞科現在變成了金蛾亞科的異名[5]
