阿德里安·弗鲁提格出生于瑞士伯恩州的下森。

德贝尔尼和佩尼奥铸造所的老板夏尔·佩尼奥在看到作品 Schrift / Écriture / Lettering: the development of European letter types carved in wood 后聘用了弗鲁提格。其木刻插画展示了他的能力和对字体的知识。在铸造所里，他设计了“Président”、“Méridien”和“Ondine”字体。后来夏尔还让弗鲁提格进行照相排版设备字体的翻刻工作。

1970年代，法国巴黎公共交通局RATP请他审查巴黎地铁的指示系统。[1] 他在Univers的基础上加以修改，设计了一套深蓝底白字的大写字母和数字，便于在照明不佳时使用。这套风格沿用到后来新戴高乐机场的指示牌设计上，在1976年上市的时候被命名为Frutiger。

1988年他又完成了Avenir（法语中「未来」的意思）体的制作。这款无衬线字体受到了Futura的启发，并备有全套统一字重。1991年他又制作了 Vectora体，具有较大的x字高并在小字号上也有很强的易认性。

1990年代后期，他开始修改自己的Univers、Frutiger和Avenir并数码化，为屏幕显示添加渲染提示信息。Univers重新发布后具有63款变体，在与莱诺字体公司设计师小林章的合作下Frutiger的新版Frutiger Next配有真正的意大利斜体并添加的字重[2][3] Frutiger将Avenir字体家族里添加的细字和粗字字重，并作为Avenir Next重新发表。

阿德里安·弗鲁提格的职业生涯跨越了金属铅字、照相排版和数码桌面排版三个时代。
