双子座流星雨

雙子座流星雨是(3200) 法厄同小行星造成的流星雨[4]，這顆小行星被認為是智神星族的小行星 [5]，有著"岩石彗星"的軌道[6]。它與象限儀座流星雨是少數（目前只知道這兩個）不是由彗星造成的流星雨。這個流星雨的流星峰值通常出現在12月13-14日[7]附近，最高強度通常都出現在14日凌晨的2:00-03:00（地方時）。這個流星雨的數量在近幾年有逐年增加的現象，在最佳的光學條件下曾經高達每小時120-160顆流星。雙子流星雨在1862年首度被觀測[1]，而在更早已有英仙座流星雨（36AD）和獅子座流星雨（902AD）的觀測紀錄。

這個流星雨的流星看似都來自雙子座內的輻射點，因而被稱為雙子座流星雨。然而，這些流星可以在夜晚的天空中出現在任何的地方，並且經常呈現淡黃色的色調。在赤道以北，輻射點大約在日落時從地平線上升起，在當地的晚間一小時許就到達適合觀測的高度；在南半球，輻射點只在子夜前後出現在地平線上。在北半球的觀測者看見的輻射點高度越高，看見的雙子座流星雨的流星數量也會越多[8]。這些流星的速度相較於其他的流星雨為中等，大約每秒為35公里（22英里），因此很容易被看見。雙子座流星雨現在被認為是年度中最穩定與活躍的流星雨，這群流星雨的流星大約在38公里（24英里）的高度處就會瓦解[9]。
