葛蘭特出生於俄亥俄州費爾維尤公園。她的父親是蘇格蘭地質學教授[5] ，母親是美國政治學教授，[6] 、駐非洲[7]、中東的外交官[8][9][10]和教育行政人員[11]。她的父母都在非洲度過了一段時間，在她很小的時候就離婚了，她與住在墨西哥城的母親住在一起[2]。在墨西哥城，她就讀於各國學生組成的英國學校。11歲時，葛蘭特在密蘇里州聖路易的一所寄宿學校托馬斯杰斐遜學校（英语：Thomas Jefferson School (St. Louis, Missouri)）學習了一年。此後不久，她隨母親搬到巴黎，在那裡她就讀於巴黎國際學校（英语：International School of Paris）。在歐洲和中東不同地區的這些經歷，葛蘭特會說英語、西班牙語和法語[2][12]。
