直布罗陀社会民主党成立于1989年。在该党参加的首次选举——1992年直布罗陀大选（英语：Gibraltar general election, 1992）中，获得了20.2%的选票，获得直布罗陀议会中15个席位中的7个席位。2000年直布罗陀大选（英语：Gibraltar general election, 2000）中，该党获得8个席位。2005年，该党与直布罗陀工党合并，名称不变。
