比爾·威瑟斯
小威廉·哈里森·威瑟斯（英語：William Harrison Withers Jr.，1938年7月4日—2020年3月30日）[1]是活躍於1970年至1985年的美國創作歌手與音樂家。[2]他錄製了數首熱門單曲，包括〈Lean on Me〉、〈Ain't No Sunshine〉、〈Use Me〉、〈Just the Two of Us〉、〈Lovely Day〉和〈Grandma's Hands〉。威瑟斯獲得三項葛萊美獎，他的人生被拍成2009年的紀錄片《Still Bill》。[2]他於2015年入選搖滾名人堂。[3]

比爾·威瑟斯出生於西維吉尼亞州的煤礦小鎮斯拉布佛克。[4]他天生有著自己難以適應的口吃。[5]他在附近的貝克利長大，而他的父親在他13歲時過世。[5]威瑟斯18歲在美國海軍服役了9年，[6]在此期間，他克服了口吃，並開始對唱歌和寫歌感興趣。[7]

1970年初，威瑟斯的示範帶受到了薩塞克斯唱片老闆克拉倫斯·阿凡特的注意。阿凡特簽下了他並委託斯塔克斯唱片的台柱人物布克爾·T·瓊斯來製作威瑟斯的首張專輯。[5]這張專輯原本計劃用四次三小時的錄製行程完成，但因為資金短缺而使專輯得壓在三次解決，第二次與最後一次錄製行程之間還隔了六個月。最後在1971年5月，威瑟斯的首張專輯《Just as I Am》正式發行並以〈Ain't No Sunshine〉和〈Grandma's Hands〉作為主打單曲，此專輯還有史蒂芬·史提爾斯參與錄製主音吉他部分。[9]專輯封面則是威瑟斯提著午餐盒，站在他工作的、位於加州伯班克的韋伯飛機公司前的照片。[4]
專輯獲得了成功，此時的威瑟斯開始與由沃茲103街節奏樂團的成員：鼓手詹姆士·加德森、吉他手班諾斯·布萊克門（Benorce Blackmon）、鍵盤手雷·傑克森（Ray Jackson）、貝斯手梅爾文·鄧拉普（Melvin Dunlap）組成的伴奏樂團一同巡演。
在1972年3月14日星期二舉行的第14屆葛萊美獎上，威瑟斯以〈Ain't No Sunshine〉獲得最佳節奏藍調歌曲。這首歌售出超過一百萬張，並於1971年9月被美國唱片業協會（RIAA）授予金唱片認證。[10]
在巡演中斷期間，威瑟斯錄製了他的第二張專輯《Still Bill》。主打單曲〈Lean on Me〉在1972年7月8日那一周成為冠軍單曲。這是威瑟斯確認銷量超過三百萬的第二張單曲。[10]緊接著的第二主打單曲〈Use Me〉於1972年8月發行，唱片銷量也突破百萬張，於1972年10月12日同樣被RIAA授予金唱片認證。[10]他於1972年10月6日在卡內基音樂廳的演出被錄製成於1973年4月21日發行的現場專輯《Live at Carnegie Hall》。1974年，威瑟斯錄製了專輯《+'Justments》，但因為與薩塞克斯唱片的法律糾紛，他無法再錄製其他作品。
在此期間，他為葛蕾蒂絲·奈特與種子合唱團專輯《I Feel a Song》創作並製作了兩首歌，並於1974年10月與詹姆士·布朗、伊特·珍和B·B·金為喬治·福爾曼和穆罕默德·阿里四周後在薩伊共和國舉行的「叢林震顫之戰」作演出。[11]他的演出片段被收錄於1996年紀錄片《一代拳王》中，其他未收錄片段則收錄於2008年紀錄片《靈魂勢力》中。
哥倫比亞唱片 编辑
在與薩塞克斯唱片分道揚鑣後，威瑟斯於1975年與哥倫比亞唱片簽約。他在哥倫比亞唱片發行的第一張專輯《Making Music》，包含了被用在電影《尋找顧巴先生》中的歌曲〈She's Lonely〉。他在接下來的每一年都發行一張專輯：1976年的《Naked & Warm》、1977年的《Menagerie》和1978年的《'Bout Love》。其中收錄於《Menagerie》的歌曲〈She Wants To (Get on Down)〉也和〈She's Lonely〉一起被收錄在《尋找顧巴先生》的電影原聲帶中。
1976年，威瑟斯在第一季第十集的《週六夜現場》中擔任音樂嘉賓並演奏了〈Ain't No Sunshine〉。[12]
在與哥倫比亞唱片的問題和歌曲不被批准放入專輯的情況下，威瑟斯自1977年到1985年開始專注於合作計畫上，包括於1980年6月發行、與爵士薩克斯風手小葛洛佛·華盛頓合作的單曲〈Just the Two of Us〉，此歌曲在1982年2月24日贏得葛萊美獎。[13]威瑟斯接下來分別與與十字軍樂團、雷夫·麥克唐納合作了〈Soul Shadows〉、〈In the Name of Love〉，後者受到葛萊美獎的提名。
1982年，威瑟斯以客串歌手身分參與了法國歌手米歇爾·伯傑專輯《Dreams in Stone》的製作，[14]包含了一首由兩人合寫並由威瑟斯所唱的迪斯可歌曲〈Apple Pie〉。[15]此專輯並未在北美地區發行。

威瑟斯鄙視哥倫比亞唱片那些試圖控制他的專輯聲響來賺更多錢的高級主管，因此他在1985年後決定不錄製新作品、不與唱片公司續約也不再與其他公司簽約，結束了他的演藝事業，儘管他之前錄製的作品在他「退休」之後被釋出。[5][7][16][17][18]在比起大多數人都還晚的年紀才在音樂上獲得成功，威瑟斯32歲時說自己在音樂之前也已被社會化成一個「普通人」，所以他覺得對這行業失去喜愛時，自己也沒必要在繼續錄製作品。[5]他還表示，他絕不對巡演和現場表演念念不忘，也不會後悔離開音樂事業。[5][7]
離開哥倫比亞唱片後的事業 编辑
1988年，由DJ班·利布蘭德以〈Lovely Day〉重混的歌曲〈Lovely Day (Sunshine Mix)〉登上英國單曲榜的第四名。這使得威瑟斯在當年被受邀至音樂節目《Top of the Pops》演出。[19]
1986年，威瑟斯與新俱樂部樂團重製了〈Lean on Me〉，此曲收錄於樂團的首張專輯《Life, Love & Pain》並由華納兄弟唱片公司發行。1987年，威瑟斯因此得到他的第9次葛萊美獎提名並在1988年3月22日以作曲人身分得到葛萊美最佳節奏藍調歌曲獎。[6]1996年，R&B製作組合黑街合唱團採樣了〈Grandma's Hands〉並用在了Dr. Dre客串的歌曲〈No Diggity〉。 這張單曲在《告示牌》百大單曲榜上排名第一並售出了160萬份，同時在1998年獲得了葛萊美最佳節奏藍調組合演唱獎。
威瑟斯在吉米·巴菲特的2004年專輯《License to Chill》中與他合作了兩首歌。隨著《Still Bill》和《Just as I Am》分別在2003年1月28日和2005年3月8日發行重發版，造成諸多將會有以之前未發行的材料製作的新專輯的猜測。[20]2006年，已併購哥倫比亞唱片的索尼將以前未發行的材料交還給威瑟斯。
2007年，〈Lean on Me〉被引入葛萊美名人堂。
2005年，威瑟斯入選詞曲作家名人堂。[6]2015年4月18日，威瑟斯入選搖滾名人堂並由史提夫·汪達擔任引言人。威瑟斯在得知此事時表示震驚，他說：「我認為這是一種消耗獎，我在短暫的職業生涯中寫出沒有人去錄製的類型的歌。我不是什麼炫技大師，但我能夠寫出人們可以認同的歌曲。對一個來自西維吉尼亞州斯拉布佛克的人來說，我應該做的不差。」[5][21]
2015年10月1日，艾羅·布萊克、紅髮艾德、約翰博士、麥可·麥克唐納、安東尼·漢米爾頓等人在卡內基音樂廳舉行了一場致敬比爾·威瑟斯的音樂會，來重製他的1973年現場專輯《Live at Carnegie Hall》。威瑟斯本人也親自到場並在台上致詞。[22][23]

1973年，威瑟斯在女演員丹妮絲·尼可拉斯拍攝喜劇實境秀《Room 222》期間與她結婚。在他們結婚前一年，尼古拉斯向當局報告說威瑟斯在威脅要結束他們的關係後對她進行了身體攻擊，但她拒絕提出指控。[25]這對夫妻於1974年離婚。[26]
1976年，威瑟斯與瑪西婭·強森（Marcia Johnson）結婚，兩人育有一子一女：陶德（Todd Withers）和科莉（Kori Withers）。[5]瑪西婭最終接管了他在比佛利山莊的出版公司的直接管理，兩人的孩子們在成年後也參與其中。[27]
威瑟斯於2020年3月30日因心臟病併發症在洛杉磯去世，享壽81歲。他的家人在4月3日公布死訊時表示他們「因失去摯愛、忠誠的丈夫和父親而悲慟不已」。[28][29]
