斯特恩斯陨石坑

斯特恩斯陨石坑（Stearns）是月球背面北半部一座年轻的大撞击坑，约形成于32-11亿年前的爱拉托逊纪[1]，其名称取自美国天文学家"卡尔·利奥·斯特恩斯"(Carl Leo Stearns，1892年-1972年)，1970年被国际天文学联合会批准接受。

描述

该陨坑位于西侧的阿普尔顿环形山和东南的努斯尔环形山之间，西北偏北毗邻戈洛文陨石坑、东北偏北坐落了赫顿陨石坑，往西南偏南一座陨坑的距离是更小的斯坦诺陨石坑，斯特恩斯陨石坑西南偏西则濒临浩瀚的莫斯科海[2]。该陨坑中心月面坐标为34°41′N 162°36′E / 34.68°N 162.60°E / 34.68; 162.60，直径38.94公里[3]，深度约2.18公里[1]。

斯特恩斯陨石坑外观大体圆状，几乎未受到侵蚀。坑壁边缘尖峭清晰，内侧坡平直向下，具有较高的反照率，沿内壁底分布有一圈岩屑堆。该陨坑侧壁平均高出周边地形990米[1]，内部容积约有940公里3[1]。坑底表面基本平坦，但西部和南部较崎岖，分布有一些山丘和小山脊，中心点偏西坐落了一座较大的中央峰。
