巴列維文字

巴列維文字（Pahlavi；Pahlavi scripts）是各類型中古伊朗語言的一種特殊的、專門的書面文字。巴列維文字本質上的特徵為：^[2]

• 使用特殊的阿拉米字母衍生之文字；
• 用為阿拉米語異形詞（英语：Heterogram (linguistics)）之詞彙表現的文字（稱為hozwārishn（英语：Frahang-i Pahlavig），"古語"）。

巴列維文字的作品已被發現用於安息語、中古波斯語、粟特語、斯基啡亞語言（英语：Scythian languages）以及于闐語等之方言或民族語言。^[3]如果使用獨立於巴列維文字系統的變體形式，那該變體語言的書面形式只有在具有上述之特徵時才能稱為符合巴列維文字的特徵條件。

巴列維文字的綜合特性則是

• 帝國阿拉米語的書面文字；而巴列維文字、語標和一些詞彙就是從這些書面文字中衍生出來的。
• 中古伊朗語的口語白話；巴列維文字的詞尾終止符、符號規則，以及大部分的詞彙都源自於此。

因此，巴列維文字可以被定義為一種應用於（但不是唯一的）特定語言群體的書寫系統；但具有與該語言群體不同的關鍵特徵。它具有一種獨特的語言特徵，但不單如此。可以說巴列維文字為一種專門的書面文字系統；但許多巴列維文學本質上仍然是一種致力於表現白話文學的寫作形式，也因此巴列維文學保留了許多白話文學作品的特徵。
