1950年10月10日埃莉诺·玛丽·罗伯逊出生于马里兰州银泉，是五个孩子最小的。[2]她是爱尔兰后裔。[3]她的家人都酷爱读书，所以书在她的生活中总是很重要。[4]她在一所天主教学校学习。[5]高中二年级时，罗伯茨转学到当地的公立学校，蒙哥马利布莱尔高中。[6]在那里她遇到了她的第一任丈夫Ronald Aufdem-Brinke。1968年高中毕业后他们结婚。[7][8]

她经常写三部曲，这样她就可以继续保留相同角色。[14]她的三部曲都是平装版本出版，因为罗伯茨认为，等待精装版本对读者来说时间太长。[4]
