牙买加方言

牙买加方言（英語：Jamaican Patois），在当地被称为Patois（ Patwa或Patwah），被语言学家称为牙买加克里奥尔语，它是一种以英語為基礎的克里奧爾語（英语：English-based creole language），受西非影响（借词大部分来自阿坎语）^[3]，主要在牙买加和牙買加僑民（英语：Jamaican diaspora）間使用。牙买加方言在牙买加被大多数人視為母语。牙买加方言主要在17世纪時出現，當時許多黑人从西非和中非被販賣到加勒比地區為奴，他們在學習奴隸主所說的英式英语、低地蘇格蘭語和爱尔兰英语的同時將自己在非洲所使用的地方話和方言帶入英語。牙買加方言和標準英語不能互通。^[4][5]

牙买加人将他们的语言称为Patois（英语：Patois）。包括牙買加方言在內的克里奥尔語经常被認為“较少”人口使用的语言，但實際上大多数牙買加当地居民都將他們視作母语。^[6]

尽管牙買加方言大量使用來自於英语的单词或派生词以及書寫系統也與英文字母很相似，但牙买加方言的发音和词汇却与英语有很大不同。^[4]

在迈阿密、纽约、多伦多、哈特福、华盛顿特区、尼加拉瓜、哥斯达黎加和巴拿马（加勒比海沿岸），以及伦敦、^[7]伯明翰、曼彻斯特和诺丁汉的牙買加人社區依舊有不少牙買加方言使用者。在哥伦比亚的聖安德列斯-普羅維登西亞和聖卡塔利娜群島省上发现了一种能與牙買加方言相互理解的变种，它由18世纪的牙買加馬龍人（英语：Jamaican Maroons）（逃脱的奴隶）的后代带到该岛。

牙買加方言更多的是作為口頭語言存在，不過大量用于音乐創作，尤其是在雷鬼、舞場雷鬼（英语：dancehall）以及其他流派中。尽管在牙买加大多数書面語中都使用标准的英式英语，但将近一百年来，牙買加方言也不斷以文学语言的形式出現。克劳德·麦凯于1912年出版了他的牙买加诗集《牙买加之歌》（Songs of Jamaica）。^[8]

词汇

牙买加方言包含许多借词，其中大多数來自於非洲，主要来自於契維語（阿坎语的一种方言）。^[9]

许多借词也来自英语，但有些也借用了西班牙语、葡萄牙语、印地语、阿拉瓦克和非洲语言以及苏格兰和爱尔兰方言。
