巴拉瑞特
巴拉瑞特（英語：Ballarat，/ˈbæləˌræt/），早期中文亦稱“孖辣”，位於澳大利亚維多利亞州中部高地，是距離墨爾本西北方105公里（65英里）的一座內陸觀光城市，人口105,471（2018年）[2]，以特有的採礦史和歷史遺產聞名於世。亞羅威河流經此城市。

歷史 编辑
史前 编辑
在白人到來之前，這地區已經有土著居住。第一批到來視察的歐洲人，於1837年從吉朗出發，是一行6人大多由蘇格蘭人組成的團隊。其隊長為薩默維爾·里爾蒙斯（Somerville Learmonth），志在尋找相對被乾旱影響較少的土地，供其羊隻放牧。團隊中的其中3人，托馬斯·利文斯通·里爾蒙斯（Thomas Livingstone Learmonth）、威廉·克羅斯·尤爾（William Cross Yuille）和亨利·安德森（Henry Anderson）最後留下來，該處成了日後的巴拉瑞特。
1850年代：淘金熱 编辑
第一個在巴拉瑞特公開發現黃金的人是托馬斯·希科克，日子是1851年8月2日，位置是巴寧揚以南[3]。自此，前來淘金的人便絡繹不絕[4]，不少愛爾蘭及中國的移民亦慕名而來，他們在溪澗及山丘之間搭建簡陋的棚屋，區內人口在短短數月間上升至1,000人[5]。1858年，人口上升至頂峰的60,000人，而且大部分為男性。當地的黃金亦很快被淘乾，淘金者紛紛前往森林溪（Forrest Creek）、亞歷山大山（Mount Alexander）及亞拉臘等新近發現黃金的地區[6]。至1859年，常住人口回落到23,000人[7]。
維多利亞時期 编辑
1860年代至20世紀初，巴拉瑞特成功由礦業小鎮轉型為工業城市。棚屋和木屋漸漸被更加穩固的建築物所取代。阿尔弗雷德公爵曾於1867年12月到訪，吸引了不少民眾前來歡迎[8]。1889年，連接墨爾本的鐵路路線正式開通[9]。1891年，乔治五世與皇后玛丽乘火車到此探訪[10]。
城市沒落 编辑
由於該市的男丁積極參與第一次世界大戰，他們的傷亡導致人口進一步下降，最終令到巴拉瑞特失去首席省級地位給予吉朗[11]。1929年至1933年間的全球性大萧条對巴拉瑞特的打擊甚為嚴重，失業率為有史以來最高，最差之時有超過1,000人排隊等候救濟[8]:38。
20世紀及以後的發展 编辑
巴拉瑞特機場於1930年建立，在第二次世界大戰期間得到擴建，並用作澳大利亞皇家空軍的基地。1942年，巴拉瑞特連接到州際電網，在此之前其所需電力都由本地的發電廠供給[12]。巴拉瑞特於20世紀後期至21世紀初期的增長都處於國內平均的水平。2008年，市政府發表了一份未來30年的發展計劃，集中發展市中心以西的地區[13][14]。
軍事歷史 编辑
第二次世界大戰期間，巴拉瑞特是澳大利亞皇家空軍1號內陸飛機燃料庫的所在地。設施於1942年落成，1944年8月29日退役[15]。
旅游 编辑
巴拉瑞特是维多利亚州重要的旅游城市之一，以废弃金矿改造而成的主题乐园：疏芬山淘金历史公园（Sovereign Hill Historical Park）每年吸引近80万游客，历史公园里的房屋、学校、教堂、店铺及街道都保留着十九世纪淘金热时的模样，工作人员也都穿着当年的历史服装。[16]

巴拉瑞特是澳大利亚联邦大学（Federation University Australia）的主校区所在地，这所大学是在2010年由创建于1870年的巴拉瑞特大学（University of Ballarat）和莫纳什大学（Monash University）吉普斯兰校区合并而成的，主校园是位于巴拉瑞特南郊的海伦山校园（Mt. Helen Campus），占地约110公顷，在校学生近2.5万人。澳大利亚联邦大学提供从专科、学士、硕士及博士学位的课程。[16]

巴拉瑞特擁有溫和的海洋性氣候[17][18]，四季分明，由於它位處海拔345米（1,132英尺），每月平均的氣溫都比墨爾本低攝氏3至4度。
