奈達出生於美國奧克拉荷馬城，1936年畢業於加利福尼亚大学，获拉丁文學位榮譽，1939年獲希臘語《聖經新約》研究的碩士學位，1943年於密歇根大學獲得語言學博士學位，同年開始在美國聖經公會任職。他把語言學應用於聖經翻譯，創建了富有自己特色的翻譯理論。[2]1995年香港中文大學逸夫書院邀請了奈達出席訪問學人講座，以「邁向二十一世紀的翻譯研究」為題發表演說。[3]於2003年出版了自傳《Fascinated by Languages》。
